The Grooming Manual

Is Your Diet Causing Acne?

Is Your Diet Causing Acne?

Being a teenager was rough. The awkward phases. The squeaky voice. And acne. Good riddance.

But for a lot of guys, acne doesn’t just disappear with adulthood. In fact, acne is a common problem for many men.

Thought acne was only for the young? Think again.

If you suffer from acne, it can be embarrassing. No one wants to have pimples, whiteheads, and other unsightly blemishes all over their face. Even your best efforts at skincare for men can be ruined with one brutal breakout.

What does the research say about adult acne in men? How can you adapt your approach to men’s grooming to treat it if acne is a problem for you?

The Basics

First, a basic explanation of what acne is exactly. Acne - or medically, acne vulgaris - refers to skin blemishes caused by clogged, infected pores and hair follicles. It can be made worse by the overproduction of natural skin oil, called sebum. As your body’s immune system reacts to these problems, blemishes appear on your skin.

Research continues into the exact causes of acne. Humans have been dealing with it for thousands of years. Yet, there are still different ideas about how to treat acne. And about what exactly causes it.

Consider what some recent research says on the subject. It can help you treat and prevent your own adult acne.

Your Diet

There are lots of differing opinions about how your diet affects your acne. But several recent studies have shed light on how what you eat can affect your skin.

The American Academy of Dermatology points to studies that “show that low-glycemic index diets may improve acne.” That's because “the consumption of high-glycemic index foods appears to tigger a cascade of responses, which can lead to a acne…”

Some examples of high glycemic index foods are:

  • white bread
  • bagels
  • instant oatmeal
  • white rice
  • popcorn
  • melons
  • pineapple

Low glycemic foods include:

  • most fruits
  • non-starchy vegetables
  • legumes and lentils
  • rolled and steel cut oatmeal
  • pumpernickel bread

Dairy and Acne

Dairy products have long been accused of worsening acne. But only in recent years have studied shown a verifiable link between the two, especially drinking milk. Studies conducted in 2005, 2006, and 2008 all found milk consumption was related to acne.

Does that mean you should bail on dairy entirely? Not necessarily. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that patients “talk with their dermatologist if they believe certain dairy products aggravate their acne.”

If you do adjust your diet in order to treat acne, be patient. Changes probably won't occur overnight. In some cases, it can take up to 12 weeks to determine if your dietary changes are truly helping reduce your acne.

Follow a Solid Skincare Routine

Your diet may be causing you more severe acne problems. But no diet can make up for a good skincare for men routine. You need to take care of your skin to prevent blemishes. Here’s a simple, everyday routine that every guy should follow:

  • Wash: Use face wash for men once in the morning and once before bed. This only takes a couple minutes, but accomplishes a lot. It removes the dirt and oil from your face. That prevents clogged pores and infected hair follicles. It also kills the bacteria that can multiply on your face and cause blemishes.
  • Hydrate: Follow up with face moisturizer for men. This locks in moisture to prevent dirt and oil from building up. It keeps your skin clean and bright. To prevent further acne trouble, be sure to choose an oil free face moisturizer for men.

Don’t Give Up

The battle with adult acne can be a long and difficult one. Sick of blemishes and pimples? Have you considered how your diet may be involved?

Speak with your dermatologist about how changing your diet can help limit your acne breakouts. And be sure to follow an effective men’s grooming routine. Face wash for men and face moisturizer for men will help keep your blemishes to a minimum. With patience and determination, you can enjoy clear, blemish-free skin.
