The Truth: Men's Anti-Aging Products
As a guy, a few wrinkles can really add character (it works for Pitt and Clooney), but you shouldn’t be racing to deck your face out with crow’s feet, wrinkles, and lines. The best way to prevent a leathery face is a good defense. This means protecting yourself from the sun and having a solid daily facial grooming routine. Sometimes though, you need a little more and this is where anti aging products come into play. Most anti-aging products promise a lot of fairy tales and white lies. The fact is, nothing outside of surgery will permanently remove wrinkles and lines. Truly good products can, to some extent, minimize line appearance and even prevent new wrinkles from appearing. Read below to find out the truth about anti-aging products and learn some strategies to help combat the signs of aging.
Men and aging
Men usually start worrying about lines, wrinkles, and crow’s feet at two different periods in their lives:
Late 20’s – early 30’s: You’re just now finally starting to make it in the world, but when you look in the mirror, the years of partying and playing ball in the sun all day long are causing your face to show it’s first signs of aging.
Late 40’s – early 50’s: You’ve finally made it. A good career, a great life, but every morning in the mirror you see a man that looks 10 years older than you feel. On top of it, you’ve got younger guys eyeing your spot at work. You want to make sure you still look young and energized enough to stick out the tough business world.
Fine lines appear the older you get because your cells produce less collagen (the structural protein of the skin), causing your skin to appear thinner and looser. The less collagen your skin has, the less water it can retain, causing structural folds (wrinkles/lines). Unfortunately, there is no way to avoid this. In fact, smoking, not getting enough sleep, not keeping up with basic grooming, or being in the sun without sunscreen can accelerate this. The great thing about being a guy (well, one of the many) is that your skin is naturally 25% thicker than a woman’s. This means your underlying skin structure is better, meaning you’ll age better and can more easily turn back the years of neglect.
You might think a new “anti-aging” product comes out every month and you’re right. Frankly, most do not work as they’re sold by either someone trying to make a quick buck, or because they use dangerous synthetic chemicals which could actually have a negative effect on your skin. As far as science has confirmed, the following natural ingredients give you your best chance of turning back the clock:
Retinol (Vitamin A): The vast majority of anti aging products tout Retinol’s ability to remove wrinkles from the skin, and there is medical science to back this up. Unfortunately, if you’ve ever tried a retinol based product, you’ll quickly discover it will probably dry out and irritate your face (which ironically causes wrinkles). There are many different forms of retinol, with prescription forms being the most powerful and more irritating to the skin. A more gentle, effective type is retinol found in Aloe Vera, which contains a healthy dose of Retinol.
DMAE (Dimethylethanolamine): While it might sound synthetic, it’s not. It’s actually a powerful natural ingredient that helps prevent and correct the loss of skin elasticity. DMAE is a precursor to acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that causes muscles to contract and tighten under the skin. Why would we care about face muscles when it comes to skin? Because wrinkles are actually most affected by the atrophy of facial muscles underneath them. DMAE helps keep these muscles strong, thus preventing drooping and sagging skin. DMAE often creates nearly instantaneous benefits for skin by looking firmer, smoother, with less lines.
MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane): Another natural ingredient that sounds like it’s a synthetic, but not. It’s actually a nutrient found in most well-known super foods (spinach, kale, etc). MSM has a softening, deeply penetrating effect on the skin, which in turn, helps build elasticity. MSM also helps make skin cells more absorbent, allowing other ingredients to gain entry into skin cells to hydrate and nourish more effectively. Studies have also shown MSM helps to reduce age spots and skin pigmentation issues, which is the gradual decay of certain parts of the face causing uneven looking skin.
Hyaluronic Acid: Often referred to as the “Fountain of Youth”, this gel-like water holding molecule retains over 1,000 times its weight in water, thus making it the ultimate moisturizer. Unfortunately, as we age, hyaluronic acid levels decline to be only half the required amount needed by our body. Remembering from earlier in the article, wrinkles are often caused by sun exposure and natural dehydration of the skin as we age. So by flooding our cells with hydration from hydraulic acid, we can reduce lines and prevent future wrinkles.
Now that we know what causes the signs of aging and the natural ingredients that help to fight it, we can create a plan to prevent and even reverse the signs of aging. Adopt the following easy, strategic routine and as time goes on, you will see noticeable results:
1. Wash your face twice a day (morning and night): This removes oil, dirt, and dead skin which can prevent your skin from looking its best. Don’t wash your face much more than this though, as it will remove moisture from your skin, which causes aging. Make sure to use a men’s face wash that is formulated with organic, natural ingredients because synthetic chemicals irritate and dehydrate the face.
2. Moisturize: At least once a day, make sure to rub men’s moisturizer gently on your face, especially around your eyes and forehead. These are the areas where wrinkles more commonly appear on guys. The best men’s face moisturizers use powerful natural ingredients such as Aloe Vera and Jojoba.
3. Anti-aging cream: Use an all natural men’s anti-aging cream every night after you havewashed your face. Be sure to add ample amounts to your forehead and around your eyes, where you are most susceptible to wrinkles. For even better anti-aging results around the eyes, use an eye cream for men. Not only will it reduce and prevent future wrinkles, it will reduce bags and puffiness.
4. Use sun screen: Many people suggest using a product that combines face moisturizer and sun screen and using every day. We think this is a bad idea. Why? Because nearly every SPF product carries a host of strong chemicals and putting them on your face daily, if not needed, is a bad idea. Therefore, use a good moisturizer daily and if you plan to be in the sun, put some good SPF 30+ on top of it. There are many good, non-comedogenic SPF products on the market.
With this strategy and tips, you can help fight the signs of aging and just may have people asking how you turned back the clock. Want more men's anti aging advice? Read our Top 5 Men's Anti Aging Tips.
