The Absolute Beginner’s Guide to a Basic Men’s Skincare Routine
Being an absolute beginner is tough. You’re intimidated by your relative ignorance. It seems like everyone around you has things under control while you struggle to handle the basics.
Guys - you don’t have to feel that way when it comes to skincare. Too many men are shamed and looked down on for having an interest in skincare.
No way. This is - and will always be - a shame-free zone.
Caring about skincare is what smart men do. You’re reading this because you want to look your best, feel more confident, and have great skin. Even if you’ve never given a second thought to your skincare routine, you can become an expert. It all starts with a little knowledge - like this list of essentials for building your basic men’s skincare routine.
Cleanse with Face Wash
Why. You need to remove bacteria, dirt, and other impurities from your skin. They dull your appearance and can lead to blemishes. Be sure you’re using a gentle face wash for men. Harsh soaps and detergents can dry out and irritate your skin, which defeats the whole purpose of a good skincare routine.
How. Cleanse with face wash for men twice daily - each morning and evening. Use about a nickel size amount. Spread it evenly across your face, using your hands to gently rub the soap with small circular motions. Then rinse your face with cool water. Pat your skin dry with a clean towel to finish.
Hydrate with Face Moisturizer
Why. Dehydrated skin is a major factor in developing wrinkles, having a dull complexion, and generally looking not-so-great. When your skin gets dehydrated, it feels tight and uncomfortable. An oil-free face moisturizer for men restores moisture to your skin, helps prevent wrinkles and fine lines, and contributes to a better complexion.
How. Use face moisturizer for men twice daily after washing your face. This is important because even gentle face soaps draw some moisture out of your skin. Replenish that moisture and lock it in all day by massaging a dime size amount of moisturizer into your skin.
Exfoliate with Face Scrub
Why. Dead skin cells collect on your outermost layer of skin, dulling your appearance. They can also clog your pores - along with bacteria, dirt, and oil. That leads to the formation of acne and skin blemishes. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells and digs the gunk out of your pores for a brighter, clearer complexion.
How. If you have normal, combination, or oily skin, use face scrub for men every other day in the morning after washing your face but before applying moisturizer. If you have dry or sensitive skin, use it twice weekly. Rub a nickel size amount onto your face in small circular motions. No need to rub aggressively or for an extended period. Rinse it away with cool water and pat your skin dry with a clean towel. Follow up with face moisturizer.
Control Oil with Toner
Why. Guys with oily or combination skin may develop a shiny, greasy appearance and are at risk for forming excessive skin blemishes. Skin toner for men reduces oil, diminishes the visual size of pores, and balances your skin’s oil production.
How. Use face toner for men every morning after washing your face but before applying moisturizer. If you only have excess oil on certain parts of your face - like your forehead and nose - spray two pumps of toner onto a cotton ball and gently rub it onto your skin. Otherwise, spray the toner onto your clean, dry skin and massage it in. Follow up with face moisturizer.
